Acupuncture for Pregnancy and Natural Labour Induction
Pregnancy is an exciting and wonderful time in your life. There are many physical and hormonal changes that occur, it can also be a time of discomfort. Acupuncture is a safe and gentle way to treat common pregnancy related complaints.
Preventing Miscarriage and Ectopic Pregnancy
Acupuncture is effective for preventing threatened miscarriage, recurrent or helping prevent an ectopic pregnancy. It increases blood circulation to the uterus, helping with successful implantation. It fosters healthy follicle and uterine lining development. Supplying adequate circulation to the fetus, supplying the fetus with essential nutrients for growth and development. Calming the mind and body, decreasing stress and anxiety.
In the first trimester of pregnancy morning sickness can be one of the first signs of pregnancy, it varies for each person in frequency, duration and intensity. It can be due to raised HcG levels, estrogen production, emotional factors, stress and fatigue. Acupuncture reduces and relieves nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, harmonising the digestive organs and reducing levels of stress.
Dreaded Constipation, Heartburn and Bloating
These issues can go from being mild to preventing sleep, daily routine and can cause unwanted stress and frustration. Acupuncture harmonies the stomach and digestive system, relieving heartburn, acid reflux, indigestion, bloating, stomach issues and regulates your bowels.
Restoring the Nervous System for Stress, Anxiety, Insomnia and Fatigue
We use Acupuncture to calm your nervous system, helping you to adjust your mental state, providing you with sleep, calm, and rejuvenating your body. The demands of impending parenthood can cause worry, anxiety and depression. We work with you, treating the mind and body, getting to the root of the problem, restoring sleep cycles, allowing you to feel rested and ready to take on the world.
Repositioning Baby – Breech or Posterior
Between the weeks of 29 and 32 in pregnancy, 15% of babies are in breech position (Kauppila 1975). 3-4% continue to remain in this position for labour. Moxibustion is used for turning babies, this stimulates acupuncture points with heat, which encourages the fetus to turn. We use acupuncture to relieve stress, anxiety and provide emotional support.
Physiotherapy for Pregnancy, Pelvic Floor and Postnatal Recovery
It is common in pregnancy to have discomfort and pain, with changing hormones causing ligament pain. With your growing body and baby, space becomes limited, creating pelvic, lower back, hip, rib, shoulder and wrist discomfort or pain. Pubic symphysis, round ligament pain and sciatica are commonly treated in clinic. Using manual therapy and exercise prescription to assist with pelvic girdle pain, back pain during and after pregnancy, supporting pelvic floor muscles, the bladder, bowel and uterus. Conservative management of pelvic floor dysfunction improves quality of life. We provide pre and post operative pelvic floor muscle training and bladder re-education. This helps support the bladder and bowel and plays an important role in sexual sensation and function.

Osteopathy for Mother and Baby
Osteopathy eases the discomforts of pregnancy, prepares you for labour, and helps mother and baby recover after birth. Treating common discomforts associated with pregnancy, from the 20th week, the uterus becomes heavier and takes up more space in abdomen. This may cause backache, neck ache, headache, bodily aches and fatigue. As baby fills the abdomen the intestines are pushed up, lower ribs flare to create more space, this can cause heartburn, nausea and shortness of breath. There is an increase in weight and shift in the centre of gravity, body strength and flexibility. Postnatal depression can be a result from the sacrum being pulled out of position during labour and birth. The sacrum is connected to the meninges, the covering s of the brain and spinal cord, this can effect how mum feels making her teary, and feeling out of sorts.
During labour baby has been squashed, pulled, and twisted, this can result in problems with sleep, feeding, settling and crying. If issues are not rectified from an early age conditions can become worse and result in behavioural, sleep, recurrent illness and infections of the chest and ears. Headaches, difficulty with concentration.

“When I first fell pregnant, I was convinced that I would need to have a caesarean, as the thought of having a natural birth terrified me. Through research however, I soon realised that the benefits of having a natural birth far outweighed those of having any kind of intervention or surgery. As it was our first baby, I knew that both myself and my husband would need as much support and guidance as possible, so we decided that having a doula was the way to go. Mel was the first of several doulas we met with, and I knew instantly that I wanted her to be a part of our journey. I loved that she not only provided support as a birth coach, but she also was able to offer her knowledge and expertise in acupuncture and Chinese medicine.
Throughout my pregnancy Mel was a constant source of comfort and wisdom, and by the time I reached my due date, I was very well prepared, and felt confident that we could achieve the natural birth I desired. When the day finally came I was so grateful to have Mel by my side, as she worked tirelessly to make me feel comfortable, and provided relief through acupuncture and massage.. She also made my husband feel at ease and I really felt we all worked together as a team. The birth of our baby girl was a calm and beautiful one, and with Mel’s support it was incredibly positive and empowering. I will always have Mel to thank for making my pregnancy and birth such an enjoyable and fulfilling experience.
